Autopilot No More
Coasting through life with little worry and little responsibility has been the pattern of my life for as long as I can remember. However, with one thought and some action, this all has changed. It is not even a great story. It wasn’t even an original idea. Taking the first step, the first of many, that was mine, though without God and without others, I would have never moved. I guess that one step has lead me to where I am now, setting at my computer writing to you.
I went overseas a few years ago; little did I know that this trip would change my outlook on life, forever. What I saw being practiced over there was like nothing I have seen since. I saw a group of believers care about the lost. I saw Christians let their hearts break for people. I saw real prayers being offered up. I saw intentional, strategic lives being lived. I saw light starting to shine in a dark community.
How is this possible? Why is it that I had to travel to the other side of the planet to see a scriptural outlook on life being practiced? These are a few questions that have bothered me for quite some time.
No longer could I set by and let the world around me remain unchanged. No longer could I simply leave my life on cruse. It is time to live a life of purpose, it is time to move, it is time to speak, it is time to leave my normal easy life behind, it is time to lose my identity and it is time to gain the Christ centered life that He so desperately wants us to live. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
I took the idea of prayer walking from my oversea experience and have tried to apply it here, where I am now, Hays Kansas. I asked a few friends for some help. I received much more than that. I didn’t know that with one step on my behalf would begin the largest project I have ever been involved with. One turned into four, four turned into six, and six into ten. These ten people came from nine different backgrounds, different churches, different student ministries, different walks of life, and different levels of maturity. We formed a group that was not bound by denomination or titles. Our hearts started to beat as one, our hearts started to break for our community, our hearts where changed and we had to do something about it.
A couple verses kept popping up.
2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, who are called by my name, would humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Matthew 9:37-38 …So ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into his harvest field.”
We decided that this is what we would ask for, for our land to be healed and for workers to be sent out into the field. With great passion and ambition we started to work. We collected data, we did research, we prayed, we stayed up late, and we got up early. We all found our role that we were called to play. We all brought special talents, gifts, and abilities. After hundreds of hours, after hundreds of revisions, after countless meetings, and after hundreds of decisions, we had a finished product. A prayer walk book that covered all areas of our community.
Now it was time to cast the vision and get every church and ministry involved. So, we did just that! We called every church and college ministry in Hays. We invited them to be a part of something much greater than any one organization. We set a date of October 5th, we got the news out in flyers, on the radio, in the paper, on the web, we spoke at churches, and at different organizations. We were ready.
As the day drew closer, as the hour drew near, our vision was being washed away. It had started to rain. With the rain came disappointment. What else did we know to do than to pray? The rain turned into sprinkles, and the people started to show up. One car, a few more, and before we knew it we had over 75 believers under one roof at the park. We cast the vision, gave them a prayer book, had them sign a commitment card, fed them and then sent them out on the first prayer walk. Our city is now being intentionally and strategically targeted. We are taking no prisoners, we are moving, and we have decided to live Christ centered lives. One walk at a time, one prayer at a time, and with God on our side our city will never be the same.
One step, One heart, One Hays.
We need each other; the body is made of many parts. No single organization can target the entire community, the campus, the sick, the orphaned, the widows, and the imprisoned. We need each other. It is time to break the strongholds, it is time to stand with arms linked, and it is time share the name of Christ. What does it matter if someone laughs at you, what does it matter if you look like a fool? It doesn’t, God wants his people who are called by his name to humble themselves, pray, seek his face, and to turn from our wicked ways so He can hear from heaven, forgive our sins, and heal our land. I want to do my part. I want to hear God say “well done my good and faithful servant.”
I encourage you to take one step in the direction God is leading you. I encourage you to think on a HUGE scale. This way when it happens you know without a doubt in your mind, God made it happen, not you. Just one step, it might be a giant step but what is the worst that can happen? People might laugh, or people might think of you as an extremist? Do something in your community, find your people group and figure out how to reach them, or simply start praying.
